The Chinese over in our science research building have the whole place looking like a train robbers convention, even though they have all been told this. The biggest problem is that they seem to take this as protection from then having to observe social distancing.
Meanwhile, one of our friends put in her Facebook about how she went to the store in her fancy N95 respirator and was proud of it. I wanted to tell her she is basically taking out a full page ad telling the world she is a dick in the face of pleas to not gobble up respirators that healthcare workers actually need and are in short supply.
If we’re going down, it’ll be because of stupid people doing stupid things.

“Normal” people don’t ever use masks right anyhow. The second you touch the mask or your face they’re toast. People aren’t able to not touch them. Healthcare pro’s are good at it.
Encouraging healthy people to wear them is just wasting them when the healthcare industry is running out.

Right. And only a custom fit sealed respirator will keep you from catching stuff. The plain paper masks are intended to prevent you from spreading what you have.

That which at this point many many many are unaware of if they have. I’m going to leave my point stand and let the second by second waves of what is socially acceptable wash over everyone. Reasonable thought on what constitutes a mask will lead you towards seeing this as a peaceful and responsible idea being displayed.

Quite true.
Perfectly healthy people cannot restrain a cough when you put them in an auditorium. What about a grocery store or anywhere else in a stressful situation. Robbing health care workers of medical equipment and sewing a washable/ironable fabric mask with replaceable filter are not the same. They are not viewed as such in the rest of the world and they should lose stigma here.

It’s a pretty crappy message though, it’s tough to argue both :
1. Masks don’t provide a benefit
and
2. We urgently need masks for medical professionals
If 1 is true then 2 is bullshit, or vice-versa
Granted you can say that regular people won’t use them properly, but people are always going to feel that it will be someone else who will use them wrong.
And frankly the places that have this under control are countries where wearing masks has been common among the general population, which may be coincidence but certainly diminishes trust in statement 1.
Probably they’d have been better off sticking to point 2 with their messaging, and appealing to civic pride and duty (while possibly also seizing new shipments of masks under eminent domain or emergency laws ).
Also makes you wonder if we should have washable masks. Disposable is easier and more hygienic for normal circumstances, but given that they are so scarce in some places (before things even get bad at the hospitals) that they have to reuse disposable masks, something designed to be cleaned and sterilized would be a nice fallback.

I think a major corporation releasing an ad with the tagline “save yourself” goes against what we need to be doing to get through this pandemic. It’s not about saving yourself. It’s about doing what you can to protect those that are susceptible.

WOW
This is not a real ad and certainly nothing the legal or any other department at Pepsi would ever consider releasing. Troll or naivety, get past this hurdle and see it for the thought piece it is.
I’d say oppo is passing with high grades on the humanitarian front. Self protection is still something all of us need to do. Selfish abandon is not.

I have an immunocompromised sister who could very well die if she catches this , so I’ll be sticking with my self-abandonment for her sake.

And here I am without my sowing machine...
Though honestly it would probably be a lot better if people made these for themselves (and their friends) and left more protective paper masks to medical professionals, at least until the shortage abates.
